KoM, 16 years
And this blog is 16 years old.
To celebrate this anniversary, I chose "Reggatta de Blanc". It is one of the most amazing songs of the band Police. It is the result of some jamming practiced in the middle of extended versions of "Can't Stand Losing You" during concerts. It was recorded as a song and included in the Police's second album and giving it its title, supposedly meaning White Reggae.
Here they are, the Police, playing it in the middle of "Can't Stand Losing You", 1stly in 1979 and 2ndly in 2007, in a video recorded by me.

The Hymn to Apollo
The Hymn to Apollo was composed in ancient Greece. The date is uncertain but is surely centuries before Christ. The composition was discovered in the ruins of Delphi and adapted by Gabriel Fauré in 1894.
Days ago, on August 11th, during the Closing Ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics, a haunting interpretation of the Hymn to Apollo was presented and sung by the Franco-Swiss tenor Benjamin Bernheim and accompanied by the Swiss pianist Alain Roche creator of the revolutionary project "Piano Vertical" where he plays on a grand piano suspended in the air. Here, he's dressed with video tapes.

Manu Chao for free
Two hours of good vibes for free. Manu Chao is touring, refusing expensive festivals and accepting those where people can watch him for free or almost free. Seixal was one of those. And it was crazy getting there, two hours of traffic jams, but in my opinion, it was worth it.

F A U S T O
Fausto. Fausto Bordalo Dias, one of the most important and influential artists in Portugal, Angola and Galicia died today. He grew up in Angola, where he learned to love all kinds of people and all types of cultures. An extremely human, sensitive, romantic musician and poet, he left an extraordinary legacy. And he left what is the most important musical work dedicated to Portugal.

I am the walrus
They are the eggmen. Waiting for the sun.
"I am the Walrus" is one of John Lennon's most unique pieces of music for the Beatles. It begins with the musicalization of the sound of a police car's siren. Then, Lennon develops a whole surreal story involving police officers, the Egg Man (various likely influences, such as the English campaign for egg consumption) and, above all, the walrus from the poem “The Walrus and the Carpenter”, written by Lewis Carroll in 1871. In this poem/story, a walrus and a carpenter on the beach begin a walk while talking. And they convince a group of oysters to join them on their walk along the beach... The song is related to the earlier song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and the later song "Glass Onion." And it is part of a set of other fantastic narratives, including those like “Strawberry Fields Forever” from the same “Magical Mystery Tour” album where “I am the Walrus” was published, as well as others included on various albums like “Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band”.
In the end, "Oompah oompah, stick it up your jumper" means something like "oh, come on, let's go" and Lennon said that "Oompah oompah everybody's got one" means "We're all the same", we all have the same condition.
And now, one of the fantastic renditions from the Oasis.
Good bye, June! Welcome July, please be kind.

Celtic Portuguese
Lusitanians were Celts and considered the basis of the Portuguese people. Though the Portuguese were deeply changed due to the Roman invasions and many other occupations from other people, the Celtic influences never left the Portuguese culture.
Sétima Legião, is a 42-year-old Portuguese band with Celtic influence, composed of geniuses such as Rodrigo Leão, Francisco Menezes, Pedro Oliveira, Ricardo Camacho (deceased), amongst a large group of great musicians.
Last night, they performed a live concert in Oeiras. I recorded some videos.
Pois Que Deus Assim o Quis (So, God Wanted It That Way)

Sete Mares (Seven Seas)
A thousand-year-old story, of sailing for a lifetime. There are a thousand years of memories to tell, Oh city by the blue sea.
If the seas are only seven, There's more land than sea. I'll return my love with the force of the tide. Oh, city by the sea, Down South.
Today, On a northern wind, Flames of fortune, I travel south. Seven seas.
So many were the storms, That we had to face. My love i'll arrive with the next tide. Oh, I swapped you for a sea, Down South.

30 years of Hurt
And 30 years of Nine Inch Nails' album The Downward Spiral.
Hurt, it's a monument. Here, the rawest form is presented, with Trent Reznor solo and at the piano.
The explanation of the song by Trent Reznor himself
and the interpretation with David Bowie.
The deconstruction of the song by "ixi"
and the explanation of Johnny Cash's version.
Please, be my guest and check out all posts with the song Hurt here.
But the album The Downward Spiral has at least one more remarkable song, Closer.

Don't Care before Roxanne
So, it looks like before Roxanne, there was Don't Care!
Stewart Copeland had this one-member "band" that had one hit before Roxanne. The similarities in the chorus between the two songs are evident, just as there are many resemblances between this song and other early songs from The Police!
As usual, be my guest and watch all this delicious interview or conversation in the words of Rick Beato, when you can.

we're all born migrants
This is so true, so deep and so beautiful. It has such sound richness that I prefer just to listen without the video. You choose..
The rule does not carry us nor makes us exceptions Blind Earth Earth in a trance We are the wrinkle on the map the wind off course the escape off the route the wind off course Hands feel the sky and wings grow on our feet From here to there hikers Oh life that is sown We are all born migrants There are those who have a full table where poverty doesn't kill Rough sea Macabre sea Under the same sun we are children of the storm bastards in a weak boat with the wind off course |
