My choice for 2010 year's song...

This wasn't a great year in all issues including music. I know there's missing lots of good music not edited yet from CocoRosie or P J Harvey... But anyway the choice for the best music wasn't easy and wouldn't be easy. Comparing per example to last year when we had some genious works and a masterpiece from Rodrigo Leão with Neil Hannon's diamond voice...
This year I would like to post another wonderful voice (Hope Sandoval) singing this beautiful "Paradise Circus" with Massive Attack. But I don't want our moms and some of our friends to see it...
And so I choose to post my second choice from this original post. There's no other clip for this. Close your eyes and enjoy "The Departure" from the Our Broken Garden.
Have a peaceful and lovely New Year :-)

the beginning of the end of the darkness

The solstice finally. The shorter of these dark days where frightening things easily happen... As dragons in Eden in this unbearable performance... That's why I do prefer the studio version with the voice recorded without simultaneous instrument playing. Far to be anything from the Eden. As this year anyway... And we still have 3 more months of darrrrrrrrrrknessssss (BRRRRRRRRR)

To say a turkey will stand in the rain With his mouth open till he drowns in the sky Is like saying certain people will Take does of pleasure till they die That's what an alien would say (Oh, so you're an alien.) No, that would be ridiculous (Oh, so you deny it now.) I have a receipt that says Texas And I kind of like the feel of cool water With no place left to go

Dolls

This is a beautiful animation from a 1973 film called "La Planet Savage".

Late 30 years later

À gauche, moi et Martine à la Gare Saint Lazare à Paris en Octobre 1980.
As I told here before, we loved to talk a lot about music of course...
One month after this photo I wrote to her telling about the brand new album of Lennon. Different but discreet and very good. She said nothing. A mad being had killed him.
This post is 2 days late.
I only noticed about the 30th anniversary of the death of John Lennon after reading a late (again) newsletter.
Symbolically the time of this post will be marked with the Lisbon's hour and date of his death.
Below there's an acoustic version of the song I like most from his last album: "Watching the wheels" ... just had to let it go...

from the running bandit

These are earth sighs
stuck in the tension
of our attention to the void
of our ideas
are our hands
tied in rings of reason and cold
They are human jokes
that don't make us laugh
or demolish the more serious side
of our ideas
are our mothers
trapped in the annals
of passion and tedium
It's the beginning of the war
devouring the endeavor
in penetrating on the back of the river
of our ideas
I wanted to be the plant
when I heard the earth calling for me

The Avett Brothers

I have a weakness for country/folk music that doesn't sound as polished and contrived as a lot of more mainstream country sounds (in my humble opinion of course!)...the Avett brothers are one of my favorites, some of their songs are super twangy and some sound a bit more rock-country, but they all have great lyrics. So I'm posting a few different examples, hope that's ok! I'm interested to hear what you think, I've had a few friends say they don't like them at all. Way twangy but the lyrics make me smile: So romantic!:

the day all the wolves howled

Martine, parisian, is a journalist and she was my friend since the early 80's. She admired our musical taste and the quality of our radio. We often went with some friends to a disco-bar called "Jamaica". That place was mostly frequented by students of Fine Arts and Architecture. The music there, was sometimes played by the master of all guilty of such good taste and by a friend of his. I remember Martine having so much fun jumping in a foolish way with Nina Hagen's sounds and others...
Well, the man behind all this permanent discovery of new good sounds, with an amazing art of showcasing, was António Sérgio.
One year ago, November 1, I was on my way to Azeitão, when I heard on the radio AS was gone. I stood in trance. The one who had taught us everything about new music and vanguard music and how to love it would do it no more. The fact is that one year after no one was able to take his place. He stood at Basílica da Estrela for the last reunion of family and friends. Wolves, as I call them because he called himself "the wolf" due to the hours of his programs late at night. So only when I came back home at 3 o'clock in the morning, I could try to approach him but all doors were closed. The funny thing is that I knew he was there beyond that wall with the lighted window next to me and I heard a friend of nights and wolves, an owl hooting in the garden in front. And then an enormous plane passed painted in hot colours coming from Angola. The artist below was deeply admired by himself. He, who intruduced him to us so many times. The choice is his. The anger is mine.

Full Moon

One year ago

One year ago, at zero hour and 55 minutes from Friday to Saturday, October 31. António Sérgio played a song from an awesome album, which he had fully disclosed at its presentation in 1997. Sometimes he did this ... One year and a few days ago, I also had the privilege of his contact (I didn't know it was the last...) about an hour longer than he had in the program. AS usually chose very carefully the entire alignment of his programs, "masses" as I called them. Especially the "opening of the party" and the closing. Nobody knew if there was any special reason or if that song would be the last. But the last song he played, forever, was this one:

A Nervous Tic Motion

summer is over and yet I had to play this :)

You may or may not like but I think he is funny and different. I read this about Arnaud Fleurent-Didier and it inspired me to have a listen: I know very little about Arnaud Fleurent-Didier (France, forgive me) but I'm certainly intrigued by this song/video's catchiness/weirdness, and the man's general Gainsbourg-ness. ~S&S

Cocteau Twins-Seekers who are Lovers

This is the last post on Liz Fraser for this month but hopefully we will hear more of her music in the future. This song is to commemorate her unique and amazing talents as well as to celebrate her birthday August 29, 1963.
The genres of music that she is listed in are: dream pop, ethereal wave, ambient, Gothic rock but she is really a Scottish angel. A private artist who deserves the greatest respect.
Please enjoy this most beautiful song :)

song to the siren

(Continuing the last post) Some years later, Elizabeth Fraser met Tim Buckley's son, Jeff. It is public that they had an intense relationship. In 1994 Liz made a duet with Jeff to a Jeff's new song and they recorded an almost private rehearsal that has never released commercially. The song is called "All Flowers In Time Bend Towards The Sun" and was 1st presented to my country by Ri.Ma. as I told here as acknowledgment to Ri.Ma. about this original post that he commented too. In 1997 Jeff fell deep in Mississippi waters near Memphis where he lived. He used to swim in the river but this time he was all dressed and with boots on a boat singing "whole lotta love" with some friends. His experience was not enough to take off the boots. No one will know if he found any siren to sing lotta love or even his father on a rock at the bottom of Mississippi waiting for his siren. What we know is that Liz and the Cocteau Twins with This Mortal Coil made the first and the most stunning version of a song born "folky". And it is this version of 1984 that David Lynch used in "Lost Highway" as some other filmmakers.

The original of Tim Buckley is posted here.

the premonition?

In early 80's the Cocteau Twins took part of another band, "This Mortal Coil". In 1983 the soprano voice of Liz showed to the world this treasure from Tim Buckley:

Where is my mind?

Liz at 19

As commented before, Elizabeth Fraser was born on August 29, 1963. Until then I'll make some posts about "Liz" and I invite you all to join me. On the label Elizabeth Fraser you can find something more about this brilliant singer. Her first appearence on TV was on the show "Whatever You Want" in Brixton, November 1982. Here's its only video recording available online:

And this is the song (to listen) :

And another nice version live in Amsterdam 29th January 1983:

Despite the beauty of local girls, being back in certain ways seems like the constraint of the censorship in the old USSR. Nothing serious. Really. And my holiday is not finished yet. :P Sorry I didn't hear your posts yet and I'm sure they are beautiful. I'm tired and first I have to say HI. :-)

Ian Curtis

To discover or rediscover the genius of Ian Curtis and Joy Division, which influenced hundreds of bands until "yesterday", I propose to you all a challenge until Tuesday: to evoke through clips of your preference, whether of themselves, whether of tributes or covers. There are no limits.
