I'm a feminist

44 years ago, Ramones gave an amazing concert at The Rainbow Theatre, London, England, during the New Year's Eve of 31.12.1977. It was recorded for the album "It's Alive" and it was also recorded in video. Unfortunately, the entire show is not available.
It is the same kind of energy presented in this fantastic performance at the Bataclan in Paris with the band IDLES.
Happy new year :)

I drove all night

An incredible song of passion written by the songwriters Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly to be sung by Roy Orbison. However, Orbison died before the record sessions were completed and the song wasn't firstly released with his voice. Steinberg and Kelly also wrote "True Colors" for Cyndi Lauper and she took their "Drove All Night" making an amazing version. Orbison's version would be released later, in 1992, with an excessive 90's mainstream style, which did not turn the song a Rock'N'Roll classic it would deserve to be. An edition made in 2017 with orchestra, did not save Roy's version either. The best version, still is Cyndi's, the 1st one. It is also the song where she showed that she's not only a funny rebel singer. She's a great singer.

the damage and the purge

The damage. "The Beachland Ballroom" by the IDLES. One of the best songs of this year.
And the purge.
"Crawler" is an innovative masterpiece and the new album of this British-Irish punk band. Punk is an attitude, more than everything.

"This is chapter one of a new book", says Joe Talbot. And we're ardently wishing for the next chapters.
Cheryl Waters is just amazed here and it's our privilege to watch this performance.
Have a great weekend :)

KoM 13 women

There are not many songs with the number 13 on the lyrics.
Kings of Maybe is not a blog of famous songs. But I remember this old and amazing and not that famous Bill Haley's song, "Thirteen Women".

Once, the members of this blog were not 13 but 6 women and only one man around, me.
For those who don't know, Bill Haley was a Rock'n'roll pioneer. Check out this amazing performance:

Now, Ann-Margret Olsson, an incredibly talented woman, singing her version of 13:

Look how amazing this gal was:

This is the 2nd and last post about these 13 years of KoM.
See you later, take care :)

KoM 13 years

And this blog is 13 years old today.
It started due to the end of a forum (a pre-historical social network) were I and other friends used to share music and to talk about music.
Now, only one person is still active here but, maybe because of this pandemic, this blog never had such a huge audience, one of the reasons why it is still alive.
Here's the most watched posts:
And let's celebrate this 13th Anniversary with the amazing Nr 13 Baby from the Pixies also followed by the incredible "River Euphrates"

and also followed by the thrilling "Isla de Encanta" and the very special "Hey".

"We're chained" :)

the master AS left us 12 years ago

There are several (hundreds) artists that we relate immediately to António Sérgio because he was the one who fascinated us introducing them to us right after their appearance. Two of those artists are undoubtedly Nick Cave and Mark Lanegan. Cheers to them, cheers to AS, cheers to all of us who were blessed to listen to them.

jo~ao, João Neves

Stepped by this artist due to a video suggested by Youtube yesterday. It was about a television singing competition. But the cover of Anohni's "Hope There's Someone" won my attention and ... my goodness, it was just marvelous. And I hope someday a good video is available to show you all how sublime that rendition is. By now, only the "cheesy reality show" version is available.
So I searched about this guy. And I tell you, it was not easy to find him!
However, he has a couple of original songs edited this very year. Here's one of them. Enjoy :)

famous blue raincoat by Salomé

So I've just discovered Salomé Leclerc (watch last post) and I'm impressed with her long career (more than 10 years) of nice songs unknown by most of the world. Something I'm gonna take some time to explore.
For now, let's enjoy this pearl :)

safety dance

This is a song that I always thought it deserved a better arrangement. Many times I ran away from the 1982 original version, with a cheesy annoying aesthetics, changing my radio station listening. Last week, I was listening to the weekly radio show provided by one of my favorite discotheques, Incógnito Bar , obviously closed during this pandemic but still making this radio show at Radar Radio of Lisbon. And Incógnito presented us this brand new cover of "Safety Dance", yes, now having a proper atmosphere surprisingly performed by Angel Olsen. Enjoy :)

Today, Radar broadcasted the entire "Idiot Prayer", a Nick Cave solo live concert without public and streamed online on 23 July 2020, during the Covid19 pandemic. I never heard about it and I was surprised about the quality of this performance. There were some songs that kept my attention and one of them was Mercy Seat, one of my favorites, magnificently played. Checked about it and yes, there are some clips available.

Tu aí

A punk song by the most famous Portuguese rock band performed by its 20th anniversary tour in 1999, with the musician/producer Ronnie Champagne at the 3rd guitar. This song was sung by Kalu, the band's drummer and so a 2nd drummer was called on purpose.
"Tu aí" (you, there) is a song written for a theater play called "Enemies" premiered in 1990 and is about a boy trying to grow and to gain knowledge in a hostile environment amongst ruins and drugs.

Wolf Alice, Blue Weekend, take III

3rd and last post about the presentation of Wolf Alice's new album, Blue Weekend.
Wolf Alice's songs have this quality of getting more powerful from the middle to the end and Lipstick On The Glass is a great example of that.

And as usual, let's remember some of Wolf Alice's older songs. But this time, here's a live show recorded this year including songs from all their 3 albums. Notice that their older songs were more punky than now, mostly dream pop.
The songs are: Don't Delete The Kisses (Visions of a Life - 2017), Smile (Blue Weekend - 2021), Beautifully Unconventional (Visions of a Life - 2017), Formidable Cool (Visions of a Life - 2017), Bros (My Love Is Cool - 2015), The Last Man on Earth (Blue Weekend - 2021), Giant Peach (My Love Is Cool - 2015).

Enjoy, have a nice weekend :)

Wolf Alice, Blue Weekend, take II

Another amazing song from Blue Weekend, Wolf Alice's new album.
This one, The Last Man On Earth, is pretty known by some of us once it was published as a single and it's been played on many radio stations since February

And as promised on the last post, let's remember some of Wolf Alice's great older songs.
I can't help myself, I LOVE this next song. Sorry, I posted this video long before but it is the ONLY good video with this fantastic Planet Hunter.
And another, Giant Peach, from their 1st album My Love Is Cool.

Wolf Alice, Blue Weekend, take I

What a great band, superb musicians, amazing singer, Ellie Rowsell - she's gonna be 29 on day 19.
Just yesterday, Wolf Alice presented us this video with this amazing song Feeling Myself from their last album Blue Weekend out since last 4th of June.
Wolf Alice is a fantastic band and I bet it's gonna be one of the great big things during this decade. Anyway I'm suspicious not only because I LOVE unconditionally some of their songs and I love their good taste. No wonder, because they also love my beloved city of Lisbon, even if I don't enjoy their song named precisely Lisbon :))) And guess what, they do feel very sorry about Brexit and about getting off of the European Community, as most of British artists do :(
So let's start this presentation about Wolf Alice's last album with 3 posts with new and older songs.
Enjoy :)

Day of Portugal and Camões ... and Portuguese Language

Portuguese and Galician languages were once the same. Luís de Camões, our 1st great poet (XVI century) and the writer of this poem, had Galician ancestry. This song was written in late 1960s by José Afonso, who had an intense relationship with Galician culture. And me too, I have Galician ancestry. Uxía Senlle is a Galician singer and a great lover of Portuguese culture.

Verdes são os campos
da cor de limão
Assim são os olhos
do meu coração

Campo, que te estendes
com verdura bela
Ovelhas, que nela
vosso pasto tendes

De ervas vos mantendes
que traz o Verão
E eu das lembranças
do meu coração

Isso que comeis
não são ervas, não
São graças dos olhos
do meu coração
Green are the fields
like color of lemon
So are the eyes
of my sweetheart

Field, you extend
with beautiful greenery
Sheep therein
your pasture have

With herbs they endure
brought by the Summer
And I from the memories
of my sweetheart

What you're eating
aren't herbs, no.
Are graces from the eyes
of my sweetheart

Epic 10, from an artist born 20 years later.

Sharon had this brilliant decision of celebrating the 10th anniversary of Epic, her wonderful 2nd album, inviting several artists to cover her songs. The result is just beautiful.

I use to say that Sharon Van Etten was born 20 years later. She's a genius but I feel sorry to testify that most of her public is older than her and if her music was made 10 or 20 years earlier, she'd be a gigantic artist.

Effectively I was waiting for a nice video with Courtney Barnett's tribute to make this post. I usually don't post twice in one day, I hate to take peoples's precious time. But once this fantastic last video below came out JUST one hour ago, I had to anticipate this post about this 10th Anniversary.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did :)

Do you realize?

Almost hidden from the public, this is a beautiful cover by Sharon Van Etten, from the Flaming Lips original, posted HERE.

Yes, Sharon is a beautiful person, an amazing artist and one of the most important revelations from the last decade.
Hard to think she was so close to go away as she sings in "Don't do it". She recovered very well and she even supported Sounds of Saving as we could watch in THIS POST.

But, please, be my guest and restart this last video and watch the entire session recorded on 25th March 2011, almost 10 years ago

Laetitia Tamko AKA Vagabon is a young singer. She started her career 6 years ago and I wouldn't know her if it weren't for this lovely cover with Courtney Barnett, out a week ago.
This song is mainly known for the versions of Rod Stewart, known for generations in all universes and its parallels and beyond them. Tim Hardin was such a great composer. He made this song, as the one I posted days before here, "If I Were a Carpenter" and many more covered with huge success by several artists. Sorry about this weak video, but here's Tim:
